December 15, 2008
Dr Robert Verkerk and Ms. Meleni Aldridge of Alliance for Natural Health visited manufacturing unit of Varuna Herbo Biotec Pvt Ltd in India to study the system of quality and value assurance in their ayurvedic and herbal health care products. After the day long intensive visit which concurred with the auditing by a team of ISO 9000 and HACCP auditors, the team from Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) expressed their satisfaction on the systems and commitment of TeamVaruna towards providing qualitative and effective health care solutions. ANH proposed to Varuna Herbo Biotec for taking active participation in the campaign in the capacity of industry partner from India. TeamVaruna has accepted to join the campaign and has already taken certain important assignments regarding comparative heavy metal analysis, variations in hydro and solvent extractions and stability data generation in case of poly herbal formulations with the help of bioactive markers.
The Alliance for Natural Health (http://www.anhcampaign.org) is a not-for-profit organisation representing a rapidly growing alliance of consumers, medical doctors, alternative health practitioners, health food companies, sustainable farming and other interests committed to developing a new, sustainable paradigm in healthcare that is fully compatible with nature, the human body and other biological systems.
The ANH is an internationally-active, not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation, based in the UK, that is working on behalf of the general public and natural health interests to help positively shape the regulatory and scientific framework affecting natural health in order to develop more sustainable, natural and biologically-compatible approaches to healthcare. As an alliance, the ANH brings together, globally, consumers, scientists, medical doctors, integrative practitioners, lawyers and other interested persons—all with a common interest to protect and promote natural health.
How ANH is working to protect traditional medicinal cultures
Exposing problems for small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in complying with the EU Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive
Working to safeguard the EU food supplements regime as a safe harbour for botanical products
Helping to bring together representatives from different medicinal cultures so that their common interests can be protected
Considering the feasibility of a judicial review of the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive which a) acts disproportionately on smaller suppliers of traditional herbal products, and b) discriminates against non-European herbal traditions. The ANH has sought an initial view from its leading European Law barristers who have indicated from a limited assessment of the evidence that there appear to be reasonable grounds for a legal challenge (judicial review) to the two Directives in question, on the basis of disproportionality, legal uncertainty and, potentially, even cultural discrimination.
